“There has been a significant increase in the proportion of A* and A grades achieved across a range of subject areas, and the school is delighted with the progress outcomes achieved by students especially in English and Mathematics”, she said.

Schools in Basildon and Canvey were also congratulating their pupils including Basildon Academy, which got its best ever results, and Castle View School where the majority of pupils got A* to C grades. Twenty students achieved at least eight A/A* grades, including Ophelia Hornsey, who under the government’s new Progress 8 measure achieved the highest progress score in the school.
“Everyone at the school has worked so hard to achieve these excellent results, and I am so pleased that everyone’s efforts have been rewarded”, said Mr Barton.
“There has been particularly strong achievement this year in English Language, biology, physics, chemistry, dance, music and ICT”.
Sunderland students have bucked the national trend with a slight increase in the percentage of pupils achieving A* to C grades.
PUPILS at Westonbirt School celebrated their success in their GCSEs with 44 per cent of A* to A grades.
“The results are truly excellent, especially as 40% of our students did not go to primary school in the United Kingdom and a vast majority do not have English as their first language”.
“It is our goal to ensure that we continue to improve even further in the future”.
“To achieve over 80% is a landmark for the school and shows the tremendous dedication of the parents and the teaching staff”.

The figure for A* grades alone at the Maze Green Road independent was 37 per cent, while the national average was just 6.5 per cent.
