New Zealand PM: McCaw to be offered knighthood

McCaw was offered a knighthood in 2011 after he led the team to their World Cup victory, but turned it down saying it did not seem appropriate while he was still playing.

The Bledisloe Cup, the Rugby championship, the World Cup – you name it; he’s done it and won it.

Sir Graham says McCaw’s got it all.

But as New Zealand celebrated his record 142nd Test when leading the All Blacks to a 41-13 win over Australia at the weekend, and with retirement expected in two months, Key said there was no doubt a second offer would be made.

Mr Key also observed the “Richie for high minister” heading at Eden Park the alternative whole night and said: “I thinking, good, good opportunity really”.

“It’s hard to explain, but I didn’t want that to stop, that feeling, that moment”, he said after the match.

The 34-year-old was part-way through a degree in agricultural science before becoming a full-time rugby player. I don’t know if politics is one of those options.

“He’s an outstanding leader and done brilliantly”.

All Blacks captain Richie McCaw continues to be the most popular man in New Zealand this week. “Can’t do any better than he’s done”, said Henry.

A knighthood for Richie McCaw is still on offer, the prime minister says.

“The Prime Minister has said that McCaw has previously been judged worthy of such recognition, and in his view nothing has changed”.
