Taliban twin bombings kill 24 people in Afghanistan’s capital

A suicide bomber targeted the humanitarian organisation Care International in the Shar-e-Naw area, followed by gunmen that stormed the building, Tolo News TV reported.

Sediqqi said that at least 50 people were wounded.

Sporadic gun firing and explosions were also heard early Tuesday as security forces exchanged fire with gunmen who seized a building in central Kabul, a security source said.

The attack started with a suicide bombing around midnight targeting a guest house for foreigners and diplomats in the same neighborhood.

The Kabul attack came as Afghan security forces on Monday retook control of a key district from the Taliban in the volatile northern province of Kunduz.

Sediq Sediqqi, the spokesman for the Ministry of Interior says the target of the attack was not immediately clear.

Health ministry spokesman Waheed Majroh said the attack left 24 people dead and 91 others wounded, some of them critically injured, adding the casualties could rise still further.

Gunmen stormed the headquarters of an global charity in the heart of Kabul and then battled police in an 11-hour standoff before being killed Tuesday morning, said the Afghan government.

All major roads in the area were blocked by police amid continuing gunfire believed to be linked to the blast.

“The second blast was carried out as security officials rushed to gather to the scene of the first explosion for help”.

“The enemies of Afghanistan have lost their ability to fight the security and defence forces of the country”, Ghani said in a statement.
