“Only through reforms in line with the changing realities can the G20 retain its vitality”, he said.

Russian President Putin is quoted as saying the Syrian conflict can only be resolved through political means.

In a joint statement, Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Barack Obama and the leaders of Britain, Japan, Russia and other Group of 20 nations pledged to boost sluggish global growth by promoting innovation.

Kerry and Lavrov’s talks on the sidelines of the Group of 20 economic summit represent their third significant attempt since July to finalize a new U.S. Obama called his sit-down with Putin “candid, blunt”, and “businesslike”.

“There are hard issues between Japan and China, and because of that, it is important that the leaders exchange honest opinions and make improvements”, said Tokyo’s chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga.

Hangzhou: China agreed to steps toward reducing its politically volatile steel exports but avoided binding commitments, as leaders of major economies ended a summit with a crowded agenda that also included trade, the Koreas and Syria. Mr Putin acknowledged this was important for Australia.

Mr Assad’s gains have relied heavily on Russian air support since September a year ago.

However, Mr Turnbull said Australia was committed to the destruction of Islamic State in the field and would be “unrelenting” in this effort.

“We are working for this region to be declared no-fly zone”, Erdogan said at the G20 meeting in China, referring to the land extending from Jarabulus to Azaz in northern Syria seized from IS jihadists.

Obama “made clear to president Putin that sanctions will continue on Russian Federation if Minsk is not fully implemented”, the White House pool reported.

The official says Obama and Putin clarified remaining gaps in the talks, which largely involve how the deal would be implemented.

It appeared Sunday as if they were getting close: American officials scheduled a press conference and installed two podiums, then hastily had to remove one when Kerry came back empty-handed from the discussions.

“We haven’t yet closed the gaps”.

While the president suggested that talks at the summit have been fruitful, it remains to be seen if countries like Russian Federation are ready to cooperate on cyber regulations.

Any deal would depend on Moscow using its influence with Syrian President Bashar Assad to persuade him to ground planes and stop the assault on opposition forces.

“We aim to revive growth engines of worldwide trade and investment”, Xi said in a closing statement.
