Williams is on the cusp of being labelled as the most successful female player in tennis history as she inches closer to a potential 23rd Grand Slam Singles title.

Williams was seeded No. 1 and beat Shvedova in less than an hour.

Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova needed five match points before finally clinching victory over former champion Venus Williams at the US Open.

Top-seeded Serena Williams made quick work of Yaroslava Shvedova, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2016 U.S. Open in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, Monday in Flushing Meadows, New York.

“It’s really exciting. This is where it all started so it’s always magical out here, but 308 sounds pretty good”, she said in her court-side interview with ESPN. “But I am very happy to come back to win”. Third seed Stan Wawrinka, sixth seed Kei Nishikori and women’s fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska are also in fourth-round action. She coasted into the US Open quarterfinals with her most impressive performance of the tournament. She didn’t let that one go to waste as her younger adversary missed a forehand down the line.

Serena Williams, of the United States, returns a shot to Johanna Larsson, of Sweden, during the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in NY. A win at this year’s U.S. Open would be Williams’ seventh, which would break a tie with Chris Evert for the most ever. However, on the next point, Williams was gifted a second chance to break for the set.

The elder Williams sister won the opening set as she attempted to become the oldest female Grand Slam quarter-finalist of the Open era.

Serena Williams met Yaroslava Shvedova for the fifth time in their respective careers in the fourth round of the 2016 US Open. “I got the power from the crowd in every match”.

In other matches, No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska beat Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3 and next meets Ana Konjuh, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victor over Varvara Lepchenko.
