It was a scary scene during the Angels-Mariners game in Seattle on Sunday when Matt Shoemaker was struck in the head with a line drive, but the Los Angeles starter is recovering after emergency surgery.

Shoemaker was bloodied but he never did lose consciousness, and he was able to walk off the field under his own power.

After being looked at by trainers on the field, Shoemaker was brought to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured skull and a small hematoma. That’s when surgery was determined the next step.

Seattle’s Kyle Seager hit a 105 miles per hour line drive that struck Shoemaker squarely on the right side of his head. Shoemaker was able to turn his head slightly to avoid a direct blow to his face but was unable to get his mitt up in time.

“He feels good, as good as he can feel”, Eppler said. With a 3.88 ERA, 8.0 K/9, 1.7 BB/9 and a 39.8 percent ground-ball rate through 160 innings, Shoemaker joins Ricky Nolasco and Tyler Skaggs as perhaps the only locks to slot into manager Mike Scioscia’s 2017 rotation (assuming a full recovery).

“Everybody’s been texting him”. They went in there and hopefully corrected what was causing the bleeding. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him”.

“There’s a number of candidates”, Scioscia said.
