Consumer Reports found that the phone didn’t live up to its water-resistance promises.
Samsung says it will voluntarily replace the Galaxy Note 7 with replacements available next week, or exchange them immediately for other models, along with a refund of the price difference. Sales of Note 7 are suspended and replacement devices will be ready within 2 weeks according to Samsung. There have been no reports of injuries related to the problem. Customers are also allowed to swap their Galaxy Note 7 for any device T-Mobile offers.
Samsung is recalling its latest high-end smartphone after a number of reports citing overheating and explosions. Samsung estimates 24 out of 1 million units may suffer from the explosive battery.
“Only 24 out of every one million handsets were affected by the battery problem; Investigations are still ongoing, but we have chose to stop selling the phone and offer replacements as customer safety is our top priority”, he said.
USA retailers have handled the recall in various ways.
The recall, which is being undertaken in 10 countries where the phones have been selling, marks a major blow to Samsung, which has recently seen its fortunes improve after years of tough competition from Apple on the high-end and new Chinese brands on the lower end. The Note 7 was supposed to go on sale starting from September 2 in India, which has now been postponed for an undisclosed period.
South Korean high school teacher Park Soo-Jung said she rushed to buy the Galaxy Note 7, pre-ordering and then activating it on August 19, its official launch date. Five things you need to know about the issue, and how it could affect you if you own a Note 7.
