“In addition, 26 knives were seized by police”, the police’s statement reads.

More than 400 people were arrested at Carnival, the highest since 2008.

The carnival proper started in 1966 when local resident Rhaune Laslett organized a “jump up” for local children in Notting Hill, which at the time was considered a slum but is now one of the most expensive areas in London.

More than a million revellers are thought to have descended on west London on the bank holiday weekend to mark the carnival’s 50th anniversary. Photo / Getty A barman has a drink behind a pop-up bar at the Notting Hill Carnival.

The Met Police Federation has also called for the Mayor to conduct a “full-scale review” after it said more than 40 officers were injured while policing the event.

A man approached officers at Kensal Rise tube station and told them he had been stabbed and sustained a cut to the head.

Commander Dave Musker, who was in charge of the policing operation, said that the policing ensured that the celebration was not “spoilt by a small minority” who wanted to use the distraction of the carnival to commit crimes. It’s completely and utterly unacceptable.

Scotland Yard said arrests were made over drugs, possession of knives, assault and sexual offences.

“The organisers need to understand that this event can not carry on regardless”. His injuries were critical but are now non-life threatening.

As revellers recover from Notting Hill Carnival, which took place this bank holiday weekend, rubbish from the street party is making its way to waste recovery sites across London to be recycled or used to generate green energy.

It has been held since 1964 as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate cultures and traditions.

But it was still a day of hard work for the emergency services as the London Ambulance Service said it had treated a total of 411 patients and taken 74 to hospital.
