Volvo Cars, Autoliv team up to develop autonomous driving
Yet another partnership has been forged to help usher in the era of self-driving software: This time, it’s Volvo, which announced (via Reuters) a joint venture with Swedish-American auto safety system supplier Autoliv to create autonomous driving. The two Swedish companies are planning to establish a joint venture in the city of Gothenburg – home of Volvo – next year with 200 staff taken from both companies.

Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars’ Chief Executive, points out that by merging the resources and know-how of the two companies, the new entity has all the assets to become “a world leader in AD software development”.
“The new company, which has yet to be named, will develop ADAS and AD systems for use in Volvo Cars and for sale exclusively by Autoliv to all auto makers globally, with revenues shared by both companies”, the duo said in a joint statement.
“The new company, which has yet to be named, will develop advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous drive (AD) systems for use in Volvo cars and for sale exclusively by Autoliv to all vehicle makers globally, with revenues shared by both companies”, Volvo said.
Today’s announcement by Volvo and Autoliv is just the latest announcement from the vehicle manufacturer on autonomous technology development.
In August, Volvo Cars announced it was teaming up with ride-sharing company Uber to develop next-generation driverless cars, in a $300 million project. To boost the efforts in this direction, Volvo announced that it is planning to bring 400 engineers on board, with a lot of them taking jobs in software development.
The company expects to have its first ADAS products available for sale by 2019 with AD technologies available by 2021.
