Nadal misses out on quarters after 4th-round loss

“My opponent played an overall more solid match than I did”, she said. Pouille will be attempting to reach the semifinals of a major for the first time in his career. His resume still does not include an ATP Tour title, he did not make the cut for the French Rio Olympic team and previous year failed to make it past the first round of the U.S. Open.

Tsonga advanced with a four-set win over USA’s Jack Sock.

This season, he lost in the first round of the Australian Open.

“I learned that it’s never over until the last point”.

The world No1, who was bothered by a left wrist injury that may have been a factor in his third-round exit from Wimbledon and first-round loss at the Rio Olympics, had his right arm and elbow area treated during a medical timeout at 2-1 in the third set against Edmund, but Djokovic down-played it. Then he staved off a trio of match points.

WOMEN’S QUARTERFINALS: Caroline Wozniacki has an apartment in Manhattan, so the U.S. Open offers all the benefits of a home tournament for her – sleeping in her own bed, lunch or dinner out with friends every day.

Gael Monfils, of France, watches the flight of the ball during his match with Marcos Baghdatis, of Cyprus, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in NY.

For Nadal, Sunday’s match marked the latest disappointment over the previous year and a half, which has seen him struggle first with form and then, for most of the past few months, with a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw midway through the French Open and miss Wimbledon entirely.

He breezed through his opening three matches at the hard-court tournament, dropping only 20 games.

That error made it 7-6 in the tiebreaker, Pouille’s fourth match point, and he would not let this one slip away. “At 6-4, it was not the same”, Pouille said smiling.

The fourth-round match had a grand slam pedigree to it with Kerber, the Australian Open champion, going against twice Wimbledon victor Kvitova, but it failed to deliver any major excitement.

The other quarterfinal in the bottom half of the draw sees German second seed Angelique Kerber face Roberta Vinci, the Italian seventh seed. This only means that 2016 is the first year since 2004 in which Nadal has failed to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final, according to BBC.

Three days after his 30th birthday, there were still classic Monfils moments in this one, including an attempt to tie his shoe in the middle of a point.

Anastasija Sevastova, who retired from tennis for almost two years, has reached her first major quarterfinal.

Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, serves to Madison Keys, of the United States, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in NY. But she returned to the sport at the start of last season.

The in-form Halep, a three-times victor this year who owns a 23-3 record dating back to start of French Open, will play either top-seeded Serena Williams or unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in the quarters.

Indeed, in the final tally, each player won 156 points.

Sevastova broke Konta seven times in 11 service games.

As for the men, Dan Evan’s outstanding summer made him the second ranked Brit, and rose the occasion with wins over No27 seed Alexander Zverev and was one point shy of victory over No3 seed Stan Wawrinka.

Pouille, who has now won three successive five-setters to reach the last eight, wasn’t intimidated by the massive Ashe stage, even though he only practiced on it a year ago.

Both the players have been struggling with their left wrists lately.

Pouille has had plenty of experience in five setters at this year’s tournament: Sunday’s victory was his third in a row a factor that may come into play as legs and bodies tire in the later rounds of the competition.
