Rooney: I want to finish my career at Man United

Wayne Rooney has been around the block with England often enough to know the pitfalls of planning too far ahead, so there were no suggestions of ending his global career with a World Cup winners’ medal in his pocket as he revealed Russian Federation 2018 would be the end of his road with the national team.

Although Rooney was deployed in midfield by former manager Roy Hodgson during Euro 2016, Allardyce has indicated he intends to use him in a number 10 role.

The post I’ll retire after 2018 World Cup – Rooney appeared first on Vanguard News.

With the clock now ticking on his global career – eleven more caps will see him break Peter Shilton’s all-time appearance record of 125 – Rooney can now focus on achieving some kind of success at the end of it.

Wayne Rooney will end his England career after the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, the striker said on Tuesday.

I said straight after the Euros that I wanted to still be involved. You can’t just forget it (Euro 2016) but it’s a new era for us.

Rooney has scored 53 goals in 115 global matches and Manager Sam Allardyce confirmed that Rooney would remain the captain.

There has been enough failure with England along the way, and he insists it is now time to learn from it.

He said: ‘Joe has been in a hard situation and knowing him like I do he wants to play and so he has gone somewhere where he can do that.

“Russia will be my last opportunity to do anything with England so I’m going to try to enjoy these two years and hopefully I can end my time with England on a high”.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the pitch”.

“My mind is made up”.

“Obviously I have seen players who have retired from global football for the sake of two or three days off in the week”.

“I’m not that academy player who’s going to pick it up, pass it and be neat and tidy all the time”.

He continued: “It’s still two years away”.

But Rooney, who revealed he has started his coaching badges in preparation for a managerial career, says his heart is set on seeing out his playing days in Manchester.

“We have seen a lot of teams overachieve with him as manager”.

Antonio has a motto inscribed on the inside of his left arm that reads “I came to this world with nothing, so anything I leave with is a profit”. With him leaving after the cup, here are the three main players to carry his load at the 2022 World Cup. We have not really spoken about it, but we will in the next couple of days.

“One of the reasons why I turned down Jamaica because I thought “I’m not too old”, he said. It has been the case with a lot of experienced players who have played at the top level for many years. “If he gets the best out of our players, then he’ll do well”. That’s down to the way he’s got them playing.

“People are entitled to their opinions but I still feel capable of doing a good job for England”, he said.

“Then again, we go into a tournament and it ends in disappointment, so it’s something which I’m sure Sam will look at and try to work out why that’s the case”.
