NFL Season Preview: Prescott, Sanchez ease Cowboys’ loss of Romo
The team’s 2015 offensive MVP was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, meaning he will not be able to participate the first six weeks.

The Dallas Cowboys are adding quarterback Mark Sanchez as the backup to rookie Dak Prescott while Tony Romo recovers from a back injury.
After Romo suffered a compression fracture in his back on August 25 in a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, sources said he would need 6-10 weeks to recover. He broke his right elbow during the offseason. The former Baylor basketball standout is likely headed to the practice squad if no other team claims him.
Prescott has impressed this preseason, and while the Cowboys are high on him, Jones doesn’t plan on moving away from Romo anytime soon. They also waived cornerback Dexter McDougle, a third-round draft pick in 2014; safety Ronald Martin; and running back Dominique Williams.
That’s an ominous number for Dallas because it’s how many games Romo missed after he broke his left collarbone the first time last season.
Meantime, Dallas is expecting Prescott to deliver wins after he threw for five touchdowns without an interception and ran for two scores in three exhibition games.
Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has won the appeal of his 10-game suspension for another violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy and will only be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season.
THE LAST WORD: Tight end Jason Witten, going into his 14th season, was the creator of the “same old story” line from a few years ago when the Cowboys kept missing the playoffs with losses that dropped them to 8-8 on the final day of the season.

Romo injured his back August 25 against the Seahawks, and the compression fracture of his L1 vertebra will keep him out 6-10 weeks. Jackson tore a pectoral muscle early in camp.
