McIlroy ended a 16-month winless run on the PGA Tour by claiming a two-shot win at TPC Boston, overturning a six-shot deficit during the final round.

The four-time major victor, who has come under fire from ex-players and now golf analysts Brandel Chamblee and Johnny Miller, started the final round at TPC Boston six shots behind Paul Casey – but overcame the Englishman with a six-under-par 65 to win by two strokes.

“I think he overdid the weight room, I don’t that helped him at all”, Miller said during the Open Championship broadcast.

After his win he also issued a statement following suggestions he spends too much time in the gym.

“The reason I play at such a high level, and hopefully will continue to play at a high level for the next 10 to 15 years, is because of the work I do in the gym”.

McIlroy has added a substantial amount of muscle to his frame over the last number of years, with Nick Faldo one of many analysts to question whether such gym work is necessary for the four-time Major victor to fulfill his potential as a golfer.

When Rory McIlroy’s golf is clicking, there’s not much to criticize. “That’s always I feel an unfair criticism”. They don’t know what they’re talking about, says the 26-year-old.

At The Barclays, the Northern Irishman was third last in the field for Strokes Gained Putting.
