Giancarlo Stanton activated from DL but will only pinch hit for now

“But we do expect that to happen at some point”.

“That’s what he knows he can do right now”, Mattingly said. In Stanton and Bour, the Fish will get their two top power threats back into the mix as they look to stay alive in the National League Wild Card race.

Stanton took part in a simulated game Tuesday, did some baserunning and shagged fly balls.

In addition to Stanton, the Marlins activated Bour earlier in the day as well.

Still, this is a nice surprise for Miami as it appeared Stanton had once again fallen victim to a season-ending injury.

Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton went on the disabled list on August 14 with a groin injury, and for a time it appeared that Stanton would miss the remainder of the 2016 season.

With one win over their last 10 games entering Tuesday’s matchup with the Phillies, the Marlins hope Stanton can provide a late-season resurgence and close the five-game gap behind the Cardinals for the final wild-card spot. At the time he landed on the disabled list, Stanton had a.244/.329/.496 batting line with 25 homers, but he’d been on a blistering hot streak dating back to mid-June.

“Obviously, we’re not in a great spot right now, at this moment”, Mattingly said. It’s good to see guys coming back. “It can’t hurt. I think we’ve been a little bit beaten up over the last couple weeks, mentally”.
