Del Potro into US Open QF
Fifth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the second straight year on Monday with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.

The way she patrolled the court, however, and her grit, indicated that the seven-time grand slam victor still had plenty to offer.
“I live in the present so I move on”, Venus said. I’m so exciting to still winning matches and maybe be in the top positions in the future.
“I was close to retire before my third surgery but after that I always believe in myself to come back”, said Del Potro, who will face the victor between third seed Swiss Stan Wawrinka and Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko. Pliskova broke for 6-5 on a net-cord victor when her rival looked set to put a volley away.
“I didn’t expect to be in the quarters in my second grand slam after my comeback”.
Czech Karolina Pliskova toppled two-time champion Venus Williams 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
“Oh wow, it’s really exciting”, Serena told the crowd.
But Halep regained her composure, channeling that frustration into positive performance, breaking Suarez-Navarro back for 6-5 and then serving the match out, wrapping up the straight-set victory with a backhand victor that had too much for Suarez-Navarro to handle as she came to net.
The popular Argentine is proving that, into the quarters despite playing just 10-plus sets.
“It’ll be great to play Juan Martin again”.
Del Potro, who never had the chance to defend his title due to a wrist injury in 2010. Afterward, his back seized up when he tried to sling his equipment bag over a shoulder. Raonic’s total was 62, 21 in the third set alone.
It wasn’t the 2009 victor, though, but his younger foe.
After only 14 games, Thiem retired from Monday’s fourth-round match with Juan Martin del Potro with a right knee injury. He has paid the price for playing too much in 2016.
Should del Potro make the semi-finals he would be the lowest-ranked man to do so at a Grand Slam since 237th-ranked Vladimir Voltchkov at Wimbledon in 2000.
It was a odd match all round, with Del Potro 3-0 down in the first set before receiving treatment on his shoulder. “I tried the best I could to find my way out of it”. He needed a wild card to play at the US Open since his ranking sat at 142nd.
Del Potro will face Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in the Quarterfinals. Jimmy Connors was 174th when he made a stirring run to the semifinals in NY at age 39 in 1991.
“I really don’t know what’s going on”, he said. I am far away in Argentina but I feel at home here, in this stadium, in this city. It’s fantastic for me. I got the power from the crowd in every match, and that’s help me a lot to fight and to play my best tennis. “That’s great for me”.
Thiem broke Del Potro’s serve during the opening game of the match but it soon became apparent that the Austrian was suffering with a knee problem. Please see our terms of service for more information. He missed the tournament the past two years after surgeries on his left wrist. The next step is to add more pace to the backhand.
Del Potro upset Wawrinka in the second round at Wimbledon, a harbinger of good things this summer. Serving for the match in the third set, the third-seeded Wawrinka was broken and then lost a tiebreaker.
The 2014 runner-up won 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Monday in the last singles match at the current Louis Armstrong Stadium.

No man ranked as low as del Potro has ever made the final of a major. It would something new for my career, but since I have had many changes, I could try it.
