Team Sky Vuelta a Espana squad named

Chris Froome will be aiming to make cycling history when he leads Team Sky at the Vuelta a Espana during August and September.

The British rider posted a video on his Twitter account, showing him pedalling a bike while linked up to monitors at the GlaxoSmithKline Human Performance Lab in London.

Froome promised to take the tests during the Tour as Team Sky sought a way to prove that his performances are not chemically-enhanced, with the hope being that he can show he has a naturally low heart rate.

Froome, who came to prominence in the 2011 Vuelta where he finished second having initially been selected to support Bradley Wiggins, will again be assisted by Geraint Thomas and Nicolas Roche as well as six other riders – Sergio Henao, Mikel Nieve, Vasil Kiryienka, Christian Knees, Ian Boswell, Salvatore Puccio – who were not involved in the Tour de France.

Froome followed up his 2013 success in France by clinching his second Yellow Jersey this year and he is now focused on securing his first victory in Spain in what is the 70th edition of the Grand Tour race.

While Froome added: “It will certainly be a very competitive race given the strong field – which will be great for the fans to watch”. I’ve pointed out when I’ve felt there hasn’t been enough testing, in places like Tenerife [where Sky and other teams have their pre-Tour altitude training camps].

However, he faces stiff competition from fellow Grand Tour winners such as Nairo Quintana, Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde.

Thomas and Roche to support Froome at Vuelta
