Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette today recognized September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month with a reminder of the efforts being taken to educate students about and to recruit them to help prevent suicide in Michigan with the student safety program OK2SAY.
At the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St., keynote speaker Kim Desroches will describe some of the region’s many suicide prevention resources that can help instill hope and promote healing.

She said that suicide has many complex causes, that the process leading to suicide is cumulative, and that every case is different.
The national Inuit political association, Inuit Tapiirit Kanatami (ITK), has developed an evidence-based suicide prevention strategy to address the crisis, but the entire country needs a comprehensive national strategy. Gaspa added that some survivors she has talked to had some kind of forewarning that a suicide attempt of a family member or friend might take place.
