President Obama described the ongoing bombardment of civilians as both a humanitarian crisis and also a driver of terrorism, emphasizing the need for a cessation of hostilities, the official told ABC News.
Both Russian and USA officials said the meeting – which was held in a conference room at the G20 summit site here – lasted longer than planned, and that leaders spent the bulk of their meeting discussing Syria.
While US and Russian Federation failed to strike a deal during the G20 summit, Putin said that it will be done within days. “We want to be even more outward looking around the whole of the world, and Australia, with our long-standing ties and our close relationship, will be one of the first countries we will be looking to”, she said.
Putin insisted he believed a deal with Washington could be firmed up in the “coming days” but refused to give concrete details, saying that USA and Russian officials are still “working out some of our preliminary agreements”.
The Group of 20 agreed at their summit in China that refugees are a global issue and the burden must be shared, the leaders declared in a joint communique on Monday (early Tuesday in Manila).
The leaders also discussed the situation in Ukraine, as well as cybersecurity.
“Given the gaps of trust that exist, that’s a tough negotiation, and we haven’t yet closed the gaps in a way where we think it would actually work”, he said.
Ties between Moscow and Ankara entered a new phase following the August 9 meeting between Erdogan and Putin in St. Petersburg. He said he made clear to the Russian leader that until the Minsk accord is implemented, Washington “will not pull down sanctions”.

“This makes us believe that the tense atmosphere between China and the United States can be partly attributed to the Western media, which often makes a fuss over trifling issues”, the paper said in an editorial.
