Kerber’s first U.S. Open semifinal since 2011 will come against an unseeded player, either two-time runner-up Caroline Wozniacki or Anastasija Sevastova.

The pair have previously matched up on one occasion, with Djokovic winning in straight sets earlier in the year at Miami.

All in all, Murray is on a 26-1 run since losing the French Open final to Djokovic in June, collecting the Queen’s Club, Wimbledon and Olympic titles on the way.

Monfils, who turned 30 on September 1, is in his third quarter-final in NY.

“I’m feeling very good, to be honest”.

“It was really hard because he played great in the third, but I have no regrets about this set because he played well”, Tsonga said.

Djokovic’s victory put him into the last eight against ninth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a 6-3 6-3 6-7 (7) 6-2 victor against American 26th seed Jack Sock.

He had a total of just over three hours of court time before Sunday night’s match, which lasted just under two hours.

Djokovic, who was troubled by an upper arm injury in his four-set victory over Jerzy Janowicz in the first round, has had two walkovers because of injuries to his opponents and completed just six games in the last two rounds.

The other men’s quarter on Tuesday is an all-French affair with 10th-seeded veteran Gael Monfils taking on 22-year-old Lucas Pouille, who shocked 14-times grand slam singles victor Rafa Nadal in five sets in the fourth round.

Djokovic, looking for his third major of 2016, boasts a remarkable record in NY.

And the world number one is also in no doubt that his 21-year old opponent has a big future. The Swiss has been a semi-finalist in 2013 and 2015 and the fans would relish the contest between these two players for sure.

“I lost an opportunity to have a very good event here in the US”. I knew if I wanted to win that, it’s not going to be like three sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Health-wise I feel much better than I did at the beginning of the tournament.

“I’m motivated. So coming into the second week of a grand slam quarter-finals … it’s exactly where I want to be”. In his last appearance at this stage in 2014, he squandered a two sets lead against Roger Federer.

In other matches on Sunday, Angelique Kerber reached the US Open quarterfinals on Sunday, leaving Serena Williams needing to reach the final to have a chance of retaining the world No 1 spot.

If del Potro gets the better of Wawrinka to reaches semis, he would be the lowest-ranked man to do so at a Grand Slam since 237th-ranked Vladimir Voltchkov at Wimbledon in 2000.

“It’s never nice to be on the court in the quarter-final of a slam and retire”. She missed a forehand long, then netted a backhand to get broken there – and that was just the beginning of her collapse.

Edmund, who will climb to a career-high ranking in the mid-50s after his best ever Grand Slam performance, said: “It was obviously a tough match”.
