The blast rocked the area and sent debris flying, sending residents fleeing, one witness said.
The medical organization said on Twitter that at least 45 people had been killed, and that 60 others were wounded, but Al-Khadher Laswar, a Health Ministry official in Aden, said the death toll was 54 people, with 67 wounded.
In May, a suicide bomber killed at least 40 army recruits and injured 60 others when he rammed a booby-trapped auto at recruits lined up to enlist for military service at a compound in Aden.
The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes in Yemen since March 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.
Human rights groups have slammed the United States for directly backing the war, arguing the Obama administration must not only pressure Riyadh to clean up its act in Yemen, but also take responsibility for its role own role in the bloody conflict.

Troops retook other towns across Abyan but have been met by fierce resistance in key a al-Qaeda stronghold, Al-Mahfid, a town which lies further east, security sources said.
