Gennady Golovkin Says Canelo Is “Just Scared” To Fight Him

He said we lost time with the Eubank fight but we have a contract with Kell Brook. Golovkin made an interesting point in Pugmire’s piece when he indicated that Canelo is Golden Boy’s feature attraction and that a beat down at his (GGGs) gloved hands would be bad for business. If Alvarez were serious about a fight against Golovkin, he would not have dropped down a weight class to take on Liam Smith, that match will be happening on September 17.

The 26-year-old Qatar-born British boxer is preparing for his super-bantamweight contest against Italian Emiliano Salvini on the undercard of Brook’s showdown against WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Golovkin.

He’s been on a roll since the Saunders fight but would Lennox really pick him to defeat the polished and poised yet highly-destructive middleweight champion?

In some ways, it’s not all that surprising that at least one of the sanctioning bodies balked at the idea of sanctioning the Golovkin-Brook fight. Weigh-ins 30 days from the fight have Brook weighing in a few pounds heavier than Golovkin, and when they have stood side by side, Brook is not the smaller man by much.

“Floyd Mayweather says he’s the best ever”. After all, it’s not all that fair to the contenders the middleweight division if the champions are going to be allowed to fight fighters from other divisions one after another. “Maybe he’ll fight [Antonio] Margarito, maybe [Manny] Pacquiao or blah, blah, blah before then”.

And while IBF welterweight champion, Brook, is moving up two weight divisions to face the fellow unbeaten Golovkin, who has won 32 of his 35 fights via a stoppage, Galahad is confident he can come out on top. This isn’t a fight where there will be a huge weight difference like we saw in the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan fight last May and in the Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka fight. Indeed, it’s now clear that Golovkin no longer thinks highly of Canelo, who once had a reputation as a take on all comers fighter.

That’s a comment that will be repeated as the September 2017 date nears, said Golovkin, maintaining that the delay is rooted more in fear than the greed-driven motivation that built the Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Asked whether Canelo could follow Golovkin’s lead and book a massive encounter on UK soil in the future, Chargin said: “I can’t answer that one for Canelo but I’m sure he prefers to fight in the United States”. He’s not ready? I’m ready’. “It’s a game to him”.
