British Airways apologised to passengers yesterday after a new check-in system failed for the fifth time in three months.

Airlines had had a hard period this summer, with many of them facing technical problems that caused delays and cancellations, according to commentators.
Late Monday, delays occurred at airports including Atlanta, Chicago and Boston, as well as the Bahamas and Mexico.
“Our IT teams are working as hard as they can to quickly fix a problem with our check-in system, ” the company said in a statement.
Stewart, a Director at the Open University in Scotland, tweeted: “Dear British Airways, could you turn the wifi BA 2953 please so we can work whilst stuck here on tarmac?” A computer failure at Southwest Airlines in July also cost “tens of millions” of dollars and affected a similar number of services.
That did not stop customers at United States airports from expressing their frustration on Twitter.
An unexplained computer outage has resulted in widespread delays for British Airways flights. “We are sorry for the delay to your journey”.
Although all of its flights out of Jersey ran to schedule, passengers at larger airports have experienced long delays.
O’Hare International, San Francisco International, Seattle-Tacoma International, London City, Heathrow, Gadwick airports etc. were affected. According to travelers, bottled water and snacks were distributed at some airports, which saw long delays and irate customers at check-in desks.
More than 120 flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted at City, a few miles east of the Canary Wharf financial district, after nine protesters locked themselves together on the runway.
Other travellers said staff had resorted to giving out handwritten boarding passes.

The protest was part of the Black Lives Matter movement; protesters reportedly blocked the runway for six hours until police removed and arrested them.
