Serena Williams likely on collision course with Angelique Kerber

The dream semi-final between Serena and her sister Venus was however brought crashing down as Venus was defeated by Karolina Pliskova after a super match.

Serena Williams never thought she would be playing tennis into her mid-30s. The 36-year old Williams was trying to become the oldest Grand Slam quarterfinalist since Martina Navratilova was 37 at Wimbledon in 1994.

“I feel OK”, Williams said.

After moving to the top of the all-time grand slam match wins list on Monday with her 308th victory sealed against Yaroslava Schvedova, Williams has two further records in her crosshairs.

Additionally, Williams is looking to end her equal wins with Chris Evert’s six U.S. Open titles.

Serena now turns her attention back to chasing Steffi Graf’s Open Era record of 23 Slams and breaking her tie with the German at 186 consecutive weeks at No. 1.

When she’s not dominating on the court, Williams has also been busting a move for Delta. If both Kerber and Williams make the final, the American will have to win to extend her reign.

“Everyone I’m playing is playing like they’re number one. But also, given that consistency up there-that’s something that I’m really proud of”. I think it’s something that just really talks about the length of my career, in particular.

“It’s always tough to play Roberta, she always comes out to play great tennis”, said Kerber, who last made the semi-finals in NY in 2011.

She will face either two-time runner-up Caroline Wozniacki or shock quarter-finalist Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia for a place in Saturday’s championship match.

Even when the public address system blared out accidentally as she prepared to serve early in the final game she was not rattled. She has faced just one break point in four matches. “This time I got the revenge”.

The 18-year-old, who won the 2013 US Open juniors title after claiming the Australian Open juniors crown, lost her first service game but did not yield serve again in an overpowering performance that belied her world ranking of 92.

Vinci, bothered by a foot injury this tournament and playing with her left calf strapped yesterday, was ahead with a break on three occasions in the opening set for leads of 1-0, 3-2 and 5-4.

“Now I don’t really see when I’m going to stop because I’m just enjoying these moments out here, getting to break records that I didn’t even know existed or I didn’t even know was possible”.
