The balance sheet from the latest G20 meeting, President Barack Obama’s last, appears to be a thin one.

The statement expressed “opposition to protectionism on trade and investment in all its forms”. “We will support multilateral trade mechanisms and oppose protectionism to reverse declines in global trade”.

North Korea added to the drama by firing three ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday.

President Barack Obama looks on during the G-20 Summit in Hangzhou on September 4, 2016.

U.S. president Barack Obama has said a lack of trust between Washington and Moscow is hampering efforts to agree a ceasefire in Syria and co-ordinate global action against Islamic State and other radical groups operating there.

“It may help to reassure countries about tangible steps China is taking”, he said.

After a 90-minute huddle on the sidelines of an economic summit, the two leaders directed their top diplomats to return to talks quickly, likely later this week, according to a senior administration official who briefed reporters on the meeting.

Obama has made the 12-nation TPP the centerpiece of a diplomatic “pivot” to Asia, but the prospects for USA congressional approval have looked increasingly dim, with both major presidential candidates – Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump – standing opposed.

“Obviously it has something to do with the refugee question. However, we must ensure that it is an effective agreement”, the official said.

During his three-day stay in Hangzhou, Obama met with the leaders of China, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Russian Federation – all countries with complicated but integral relationships to the US. “We focused on making sure that businesses can compete fairly”, he said at a press briefing after the summit. “We have good relations with Canada and can do much more together”, Mr Lee wrote on Facebook.

Merkel also said that the G20 leaders had extensive talks about fighting climate change and trade issues.

“We need increased growth, but it must be better balanced, more sustainable, and inclusive so as to benefit all people”, she said.

The tensions continued throughout the trip as Chinese officials severely restricted the media’s ability to attend Obama’s G20 events.

His visit to Hangzhou got off to a chaotic start.

Obama said the meeting was “constructive but not conclusive”.

China levelled responsibility at the United States and journalists for the fracas.

Before then, Obama hopes to leave U.S. relationships on a steady footing, though world events and uncooperative leaders could complicate matters.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying blamed US media for hyping up the fact that unlike other leaders Obama was not given a red carpet staircase upon his arrival to the G20 summit in Hangzhou
