McCaw in line for knighthood after World Cup

He said he was not surprised John Key had joked about McCaw getting into politics, because the All Blacks captain was such a role model, but believed McCaw was only focusing only on the Rugby World Cup for now.

Noting a “Richie for prime minister” banner at Eden Park on Saturday, Mr Key said: “I thought, well not a bad option really”.

Asked if a knighthood would still be on offer if McCaw was now prepared to accept it, Mr Key said it was on offer before “so he couldn’t imagine that anything had changed”.

McCaw has declined to talk about his future beyond the World Cup starting in England next month but Graham Henry, who was knighted after coaching New Zealand to the 2011 World Cup crown, described him as a natural leader.

New calls are being made for a knighthood for All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.

If Richie McCaw turns his hand to politics after hanging up his rugby boots, a few political parties will be lining up to take him on.

“He has got a massive brand”. “It’s a ability to remember you mostly have… even started on it at this point you need to experience a portion of a shudder the spine”.

“He’s articulate, he’s an intelligent guy, there’s a range of things he could do”.

“He’s the most influential rugby player who’s ever played the game”.

“The guy’s capacity and workload is unbelievable”.

It was not the ovation for the remarkable Richie McCaw when he was substituted with 13 minutes remaining in New Zealand’s 41-13 victory over Australia.
