Nintendo promises free NX for Splatoon eSports winners

The Japanese gaming giant has teamed up with ESL, the Electronic Sports League, for a surprise Nintendo NX giveaway.

Nintendo has never commented on exactly what NX is, but a series of leaks suggests that it is a portable console with detachable controllers, that can also plug into your TV.

This Sunday sees the start of the ESL’s Go4Splatoon tournament, a six-month long tournament that will thin out the herd of European Splatoon players to find the absolute best. The tournament kicks off this weekend on September 11, and at the end of the six-month season, players of the winning team will get their hands on the Nintendo NX. As for winning the monthly cups, you get official Splatoon clothing signed by members of the development team. The top team of each weekly tournament will earn Go4Splatoon ranking points and each month the eight teams with the most ranking points will proceed to the Europe Monthly Final.

We’re still none the wiser about Nintendo’s next console (although we have some ideas), still going by the code-name NX, other than it is due to launch in 2017.

Given that the grand finals are scheduled in for March next year, we can assume that the tournament victor won’t necessarily be getting an NX before everyone else, given that most current predictions point to the console releasing that month.

For gamers who think that they might have a shot at winning themselves the NX, you can go on ahead to the ESL website and sign up.
