So as the women face off in Atlantic City this week for a chance on stage this weekend, O’Flaherty has not only the people of Missouri cheering for her, but the entire LGBT community as well.
The Miss America Foundation announced Monday that Katie Harman Ebner has been named the inaugural recipient of its new Former Miss America Discretionary Scholarship.
Ebner was Miss America 2002.
While there have been a number of out competitors in the formerly Trump owned Miss USA and Miss Universe competitions, O’Flaherty is the first titleholder to come out and then win a state title.
The competition to select the new Miss America is set to start in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Tuesday night.
It is may also be noted here that 2015 Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell is the 2016 Miss America titleholder.
The Miss America pageant has been around for close to a century, but this year’s event is going to be a first for the organization.
