Computer glitches delay British Airways flights

By 8 p.m. EDT, there were already long queues and thousands of frustrated passengers at airports around the world.

The company, which is part of the International Consolidated Airlines Group SA, says it would “encourage customers to check in online before they reach the airport”.

In response, BA said on Twitter that it apologised “to our customers for the delay and we appreciate their patience as our IT teams work to resolve this issue”.

The Metro Washington Airport Authority described the problem in a statement as a “worldwide system outage”, but the London-based airline wouldn’t confirm that characterization.

One passenger, Dana Al-Qatami, who was flying from Switzerland to London, was issued with a handwritten boarding pass on Tuesday morning.

There seem to be no cancellations so far, however.

The British arm of “Black Lives Matter”, which started in the United States as a reaction to fatal shootings of black people by white USA police officers, said it wanted to highlight Britain’s environmental impact on the lives of black people locally and globally.

International Airlines Group owned British Airways, which is the flag carrier and is the largest airline in UK. The police said that those arrested would be charged with aggravated trespassing, being unlawfully in a restricted zone and breaching the airport’s bylaws.

British Airways is reporting problems with its computer system as passengers at multiple airports complain of delays and long lines.

The delay is said to be relating to BAs check-in system, making passengers experience long boarding lines and flight delays.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many flights were affected.

Although he had managed his checked in online, he said that BA workers could not enter their computers to detect which passengers had passed through security.
