Chaidez will executive produce the drama alongside M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, who penned the pilot.
Ahead of its Season 1 finale on Thursday, USA Network has renewed freshman drama series Queen of the South, with veteran writer-producer Natalie Chaidez (12 Monkeys) joining as showrunner. Starring Alice Braga, the series is based on the book La Reina Del Sur. It also does well in delayed viewership, with the average audience nearly doubling to 2.26 million viewers in L7.
Queen of the South is the American adaptation of the popular Telemundo telenovela La Reina Del Sur, with Braga (I Am Legend) replacing Kate del Castillo in the role of Teresa Mendoza, who rises to become the most powerful drug trafficker in southern Spain.
The series, a co-production between Fox 21 Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions, is averaging 2.2 million viewers in live + 7 day Nielsen ratings. Other credits include consulting producer on USA’s Necessary Roughness and In Plain Sight. The season one finale features special guest star Rafael Amaya (“El Señor de los Cielos”) in a crossover appearance as Aurelio Casillas.
