Fox settles sexual harassment lawsuit, with an apology

Greta Van Susteren’s famous Gretawire blog is down and it’s official: She’s gone from Fox News and finally she has responded to everyone who is wondering what happened. For a year and a half, she had been recording her meetings with Mr. Ailes on her cellphone (in an interview with The New York Times in July, Ms. Carlson said she had been in “between six and 10” meetings with Mr. Ailes where he made provocative comments).

Like many Fox News hosts, Van Susteren had a “key man” clause in her contract that allowed her to leave if Ailes did.

During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. Fox mainstay Bill O’Reilly, who turns 67 on Saturday, has mused publicly about the idea of retirement, and it’s unclear how Ailes’ departure will affect him.

She held down the 10 p.m. time slot at Fox for many years, but her “On the Record” show was switched to 7 p.m. when Fox wanted to make room in prime time for Megyn Kelly. “This is a retaliatory suit for the network’s decision not to renew her contract, which was due to the fact that her disappointingly low ratings were dragging down the afternoon lineup”. Tantaros is also suing Fox over a variety of alleged inappropriate behaviors from various employees, including Ailes.

In a statement on her Facebook page, Van Susteren wrote that Fox “has not felt like home to me for a few years and I took advantage of the clause in my contract which allows me to leave now”. “It clearly is a recognition that she was right that she was treated inappropriately, and that in and of itself is quite stunning”.

The clause in her contract “had a time limitation, meaning I could not wait”, she continued.

He said, “There’s so much chaos, it’s very hard to work there”. He said the timing of her departure with the announcement of the settlement with Ms. Carlson was a “coincidence”. Asked to clarify what Susteren’s true motivations were for leaving the network, Coale said, “There’s more than meets the eye”, and that there “might be litigation in the future” so he could not speak further.

Hume joined Fox News in 1996 after 23 years at ABC News, where he was the network’s chief White House correspondent for the last seven years.

“I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my complaint”, Carlson said Tuesday.

Van Susteren chose to invoke the departure option, sources told Kurtz.

Van Susteren added that “I hope to continue my career in broadcasting”.

Tantaros’s attorney told CNN Tuesday that her lawsuit has not been settled. As they did the last time her contract was up, rumors are once again circulating that Megyn Kelly is being courted by other news outlets, especially in the wake of her well-publicized dispute with Donald Trump a year ago.
