It was 100 years ago this week on Thursday that the National Park Service was created, and the park service has a plethora of events going on to celebrate their centennial anniversary.

The first 1,000 people to arrive will each get a T-shirt commemorating their participation – and get to keep the umbrellas! Visitors are invited to share National Park photos on social media using the hashtag #NPS100.
Today, Florida has 11 NPS units recognized by the National Park Service. A Sequoia tree and bison represent vegetation and wildlife, mountains and water represent scenery and recreation and the arrowhead shape represents history and archaeology.
“There are 413 units in the National Park System, but not all of them have the term “National Park” in their name”.
So if you can’t quite get away from your desk to celebrate the National Park Service this weekend, you can at least bring a bit of the parks to you.
Brooklyn Bridge Park may not be a national park system (NPS), but that didn’t preclude the National Park Service from kicking off their birthday week on Monday for their 100th anniversary of their founding. And right off the coast, the Channel Islands National Park is a remote island ecosystem teeming with unique animals and plants.
“We need to have advocates from elected members of congress to provide the needed support, and that means that our visitors to national parks and those that appreciate our national parks represent the broad diversity of Americans”, she said. Desert Island, Maine, captures some of the park’s beauty. Visitors heading to Thursday’s celebration and concert at the Roosevelt Arch from the south faced an hourlong detour into Idaho.
The governor said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell suggested the trip as the federal agency has been planning celebrations throughout the country this year to mark its centennial. The Highline Trail has been closed all week because a family of grizzlies has been feeding on a carcass there.

The trip does not include the 12 national parks located outside of the continental United States in Alaska, Hawaii, and other US territories, nor does it take sightseers to, or through, the previously aforementioned monuments, battlefields, and/or other historic sites.
