Syndergaard, Mets sweep, beat Reds for 14th straight time

One pitch into the game, the New York Mets once again were headed in the right direction. Left fielder Adam Duvall swatted his 30th homer for Cincinnati on Tuesday, but he is 0-for-6 with four strikeouts against Syndergaard.TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, SNY (New York) PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (12-8, 2.56 ERA) vs. Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (8-2, 2.93) Although he took the loss in his last outing against the Washington Nationals, Syndergaard turned in another stellar performance by going seven innings and yielding two runs on three hits. Cespedes said the Mets’ surge is reminding him of the team’s 2015 magic. “When things work out, it’s great”. The Reds did not play very good baseball today, folks. It’s the second-longest winning streak against any team in franchise history. The club record for consecutive wins versus one team is 15 set against the Pirates in 1986-1987. It’s Cincinnati’s longest-ever against the Mets and the Reds’ longest against any team since dropping 16 straight to the Arizona Diamondbacks from May 8, 2001 to August 13, 2003.

NY has won 13 of 17 to tighten the wild-card race.

Mets: RHP Robert Gsellman (2-1) is scheduled to start Friday in Atlanta. “But I’ll tell you, when he hits them, they’re gone”.

Reyes isn’t the only one thinking it.

“We’re completely focused”, manager Terry Collins said. “That’s why they’re in the middle of the lineup. Not a matter of feel; it’s just a matter of getting results the way you want them to be”. Instead of engaging Suarez in the rundown, Asdrubal Cabrera made a flawless throw home to retire Peraza, short circuiting another inning for the Reds.

“Then Cespedes does what he can do”, manager Bryan Price said.

In the top of the ninth, back-to-back doubles by Asdrubal Carbera and Yoenis Cespedes gave the Mets an extra insurance run, and in the bottom of that inning, Jeurys Familia slammed the door shut despite a leadoff single by Joey Votto, picking up his 47th save and giving the Mets their 14th straight win against the Reds.

ASTROS 4, INDIANS 3: Corey Kluber lost for the first time since July 3 after Marwin Gonzalez connected for a three-run homer off Cleveland’s ace in the second inning, leading the Houston Astros over the Indians 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Granderson has been red hot, homering five times and driving in 10 runs over his last eight games. Peralta was an absolute disaster, facing four men and retiring none of them, and allowed two runs after Wilmer Flores delivered a pinch hit two run homer (16) to make it a 5-0 game. Rivera, Brandon Nimmo, Eric Campbell, Josh Edgin and Erik Goeddel from Triple-A Las Vegas and Montero from Double-A Binghamton. Matz, on the DL since August 15 with left shoulder tightness, threw off flat ground on Monday.

Reyes is trying to not get too caught up in this recent run. There’s no timetable for when he might throw off a mound again. NY are 17-4 in the last 21 meetings and the over is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings.

The Giants also rallied late for a victory in Colorado, so the Mets still trail San Francisco by 1½ games and the Cardinals by one game for the two NL wild-card spots.

Granderson, who started in right field Wednesday in place of Jay Bruce, extended the Mets’ lead to 3-0 by crushing a solo shot off DeSclafani to start the sixth, notching his 25 home run of the season and his fifth homer in his last eight games.
