Virginia State Police saw fewer fatalities but more crashes on the Labor Day weekend than during the same time a year ago, according to police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. For Labor Day weekend in 2015, there were 16 deaths and 617 crashes.

The time period for this report was the 2016 Labor Day holiday weekend which Michigan State Police say ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016. “Even though the summer travel season is now behind us, it is still imperative that all drivers and passengers make a concerted effort to protect themselves and others on our highways”. Additionally, police arrested 101 people for driving under the influence.

Troopers cited 769 people for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 198 drivers who didn’t secure children in safety seats.

In support of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, S.P.I.D.R.E., a full-time drunk driving enforcement team, was out from Thursday to Saturday in Montgomery County, “where drunk drivers and drunk driving-related crashes are known to be prevalent”, the State Police said in the statement. Operation CARE is a nationwide, state-sponsored traffic safety program that aims to reduce traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by impaired driving, speeding and failing to use occupant restraints. They say both methods are effective, and saturation patrols allow officers to be more mobile. Those numbers can be looked at in detail in the graphic on this page.
