‘Don’t Breathe’ thrills Sony in second week atop box office

“Don’t Breathe” was forecast to generate $13.7 million over the first three days of the holiday weekend and a total of $17 million through Monday, according to researcher Box Office Mojo. It pulled in an estimated $15,700,000, ahead of Suicide Squad’s $10,005,000 and Pete’s Dragon’s $6,471,000.

A few things to note on this week’s chart: Firsly, it seems that Labor Day is good for family movies as both Pete’s Dragon and Kubo and the Two Strings had a very good holdover from last week.

Light Between Oceans, which made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival last week, stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as a childless couple living in an isolated lighthouse who discover an infant. Climbing to #9, its three-day weekend resulted in $4.4 million and the four-day weekend in $5.6 million.

Suicide Squad is the top total grossing movie this week with $297.4 and Bad Moms and Jason Bourne share the honour of longest running with 6 weeks each. The $20 million adult drama grossed roughly $1.4 million on Friday for a projected $6 million weekend and ninth-place finish, potentially behind specialty hit Hell or High Water, now in its fourth weekend. The $175 million production has grossed more than $672 million globally after one month in theaters.

Also holding exceptionally well was Laika and Focus’ Kubo and the Two Strings, down one spot to #4 with $6.5 million (off 18%). The R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party rounds out the top five, gaining $5.3 million after its fourth weekend in wide release. In just over 2 weeks, the psychological thriller has earned over $55 million.

And Spanish-language offering No Manches Frida is expected to nab $4.7 million for the four-day holiday from 362 theaters for a stellar average of almost $13,000, one of the best of the weekend. It blew away all the competition in August, taking in over $289 million at the domestic box office, though still below how fellow August comic-book release “Guardians of the Galaxy” performed in 2014 (over $333 million). Don’t Breathe takes the top spot with a $15 million take on its $10 million budget that brings it up to a $51 million take so far domestically.

From a theater and release date perspective, last September’s release of A Walk in the Woods, another adult-targeted book adaptation that debuted over Labor Day weekend, stands out despite the fact it doesn’t necessarily line up from a genre perspective. “The Light Between Oceans” was directed by Derek Cianfrance, the film is based on the popular novel written by M.L. Stedman. All things considered, it makes a fair bit of sense to expect a three-day opening around $7.5 million for Oceans and a four-day around $9.3 million. Internationally, the picture has brought in an estimated $353.1 million. Obviously, short of stronger overseas numbers it will be a money loser even with the minor $8 million budget.
