“We are proud we are the most important global sporting event in the world that can effect positive social change”. Some pushed their own wheelchairs, others were pushed, while others limped.

That was the message at the Maracana Stadium as the 2016 Paralympic Games officially opened in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.

Craven was informed two days ago by Bach that he would be absent to attend the state mourning of his friend and former West Germany president Walter Scheel.

Beginning as a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948, the Paralympic Games has grown into the world’s largest sporting event for athletes with physical disabilities.

“If we go from 20th to 16th – I like round numbers, so I’d be happy with 15th – it means we are on the right track, it means that we’re going back to our place of being back on top in high performance, but also we’re taking care of who’s coming up”, she said.

To achieve that, the athletes said they need crowd support.

In the run up to the Games, dominant headlines reported the banning of the Russian team, which the IPC has suspended after a report by the Independent Commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) alleging a state-run doping programme.

Separately, UK Athletics will review classifications after the Games, according to BBC News, following concerns that athletes were being mismatched to create an unfair advantage.

And similar to the Games in August 2016, there is controversy surrounding the lead up to the events with the Paralympics being hit with financial issues, problems of lack of staffing, transport and volunteering. This follows concerns about half-empty stadiums at numerous Olympics events.

Just two weeks ago, organizers were not only facing budget shortfalls for the 23 sports, they had sold only 12 percent of the available tickets. Now sales have reached 1.6 million and are “growing every day”. And when we had that parade in London, millions of people turned out.

The most decorated disabled athlete in the history of the Paralympic Games is the American swimmer Trischa Zorn.

The 28-year-old Rahman, disabled since birth, is aiming to become the first Paralympian to bench press 300kg.
