On Monday, Serena Williams broke through another barrier, her 308th Grand Slam match win taking her past Roger Federer for the most in major tournaments and into the quarterfinals.

Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep beat Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 7-5 to set up a meeting with top seed Serena Williams.

Serena now turns her attention back to chasing Steffi Graf’s Open Era record of 23 Slams and breaking her tie with the German at 186 consecutive weeks at No. 1.

A year ago in the semifinals, Williams’ attempt to finish off a calendar-year Grand Slam ended with a stunning loss to unseeded Roberta Vinci of Italy. That’s the most girls from the United States to make it into the third round since the draw of that event expanded to 64 in 1984. “Today, my opponent tried to play aggressively, but I played that game just a little bit better than her”.

There will be just one Williams sister in the U.S. Open women’s quarterfinals.

MEN’S RESULTS (Quarterfinals): No. 6 Kei Nishikori reached his second U.S. Open semifinal, outlasting No. 2 Andy Murray in five sets.

Williams was philosophical about her failure to convert a match point against Pliskova’s serve in the 10th game of the third.

On the very first part of the game against Yaroslava Shvedova, William swatted an ace that sets the mood of the game.

Djokovic’s right arm was massaged by a trainer in his first- and fourth-round matches at the U.S. Open, so getting all of these free passes hasn’t been a bad thing.

Pliskova also spurned match points, including three when serving at 6-5, 40-0 in the final set.

Widmaier added that “betting alerts need to be investigated, but they are certainly not gospel” and do not “necessarily indicate any nefarious doings”.

38 – winners by Konjuh against Radwanska. Chair umpire Marija Cicak immediately halted play.

She dominated from the start and needed just 57 minutes to see off the 18-year-old Croatian at Flushing Meadows.

We also know that Serena Williams is a four-time Olympic gold medalist before the Rio Olympics happened last month.

Venus, aged 36, was bidding to become the oldest grand slam quarter-finalist since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1994 but Pliskova snatched a thrilling 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/3) victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium. She has won 22 major titles since.

Pouille quite simply ran out of steam, winding up with just about three times as many unforced errors as Monfils, 44-15. Williams has won seven of their last eight meetings.

Former French and Australian Open champion Wawrinka saw off Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko 6-4 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 to set up a quarter-final clash against 2009 champion Del Potro.
