Brito’s homer in 7th sends Diamondbacks past Rockies, 8-5

After a single that drove in a run tying the game, Socrates Brito hit a three run home run on a pitch from Jon Gray.

Diamondbacks: LHP Andrew Chafin (shoulder) is scheduled for a rehab assignment Sunday and RHP Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) is expected to toss an inning Monday.

Arizona’s seventh-inning rally came out of nowhere against Rockies starter Jon Gray, who had allowed just three singles and a first-inning run through the first six frames and at one point retired eight straight batters and 14 of 15.

Brito was looking for a first-pitch fastball and pulled one an estimated 452 feet into the Rockies’ bullpen in right-center for his third homer of the season.

“He got a good fastball, and I was not trying to do too much and make a good swing”, Brito said.

The D-backs leveled the series at Coors Field, with a five-run third inning and decent relief work the key tonight. It was Parra’s sixth homer and first in 106 at-bats since June 6, which was eight days before he suffered a high left ankle sprain that put him on the disabled list until August 7.

“It’s insane”, Brito said. “I lost a month after I got hit in the foot”.

The home run spoiled a great start for Gray (9-7), who was cruising along until he ran into trouble in the seventh.

“I felt we had him on the ropes and he had the strikeouts of Nolan and Dahl”, manager Walt Weiss said. As Gonzalez’s jogged off the field, the theme from “Superman” blared out of the Coors Field speakers. “I’ve had bad luck”, he said. He also got his first stolen base. The home run was a pitch down, too. I just always have trusted my stuff. “I wanted to up to him”.

Shipley, 24, gave up two homers, a solo shot to Gerardo Parra in the third and Daniel Descalso’s two-run blast in the fifth. After going 0-for-8 in his first two games, Pollock is 9-for-20 (.450) in his past five games with one homer, three RBIs, seven runs scored and four walks. The punchouts were down (three strikeouts), so was the (velocity), but I’m not anxious about that. It was the longest such streak in Diamondbacks history and the longest ever by a Rockies opponent. Gray’s been good at controlling the running game, and he has a good pickoff move; however, he seemed a bit sleepy on the mound in the first, leading to Segura stealing second base easily. The Rockies scored twice on a single and a wild pitch, but Daniel Hudson struck out DJ LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez with two runners on to end it. Gray and the Rockies ended the third and sixth innings after successful challenges, and Carlos González and LeMahieu turned in a couple of excellent defensive plays to keep the outs coming.

The teams traded runs in the first.

Archie Bradley (6-8) scattered six hits over six innings and Jean Segura had three hits for Arizona. Owings singled each of his at-bats, with his hit in the second giving Arizona a 1-0 lead it never relinquished.

The Rockies took the lead in the fourth. Nolan Arenado led off with a triple that was equal parts unexpected and instinctual.

“The command wasn’t there for the first two innings”, Gosewisch said. “His curveball continued to get better as the game went on”.

NOTES: Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt has reached base in 50 consecutive games against the Rockies.

Rockies: OF Charlie Blackmon was a late scratch with back tightness.

The Rockies recalled long reliever and spot starter Christian Bergman from Triple-A Albuquerque. He was 0 for 4 with a sacrifice fly. He didn’t play Saturday night due to an upset stomach. Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke, who pitched for the Dodgers the past three seasons, will make his first start Monday at Dodger Stadium since signing with Arizona.
