PRESIDENTIAL RACE | Clinton says controversies behind her; Trump begs to differ
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her running mate, Tim Kaine, will not campaign or run ads on September 11.

Trump countered her rhetoric on Friday by releasing a video showing Clinton in the 1990s discussing a crime bill and referring to “super-predators”, or at-risk youth she said needed to be brought under control.
He had been sued as a young developer for failing to rent to black and Latino tenants, and by black employees of his casinos, the Democratic presidential candidate said.
At her rally in Reno, Clinton charged that Trump has essentially embraced the ideas of the so-called “alt-right”, an amorphous movement closely tied with white nationalism that has been criticized as racist, misogynistic and anti-Semitic.
Jennifer Hochschild, a professor at Harvard University who focuses on race and immigration, said she did not think Trump could fix his relationship with black and Hispanic voters.
Trump has recently attempted to enlarge his tiny base of support among blacks – it has been as low as 1 percent – arguing that African Americans have “nothing to lose” by voting for him.
At a rally in New Hampshire, Trump said such tricks are from the Democratic playbook.
But this week, the two major candidates forced that debate into the open with Clinton’s speech linking Trump to the “alt-right” movement, and Trump’s new charge that the former secretary of state is “a bigot” who has pandered to minorities with feckless policies as part of a calculated quest for votes.
Calling it “a exhausted, disgusting argument”, he said it was Clinton who was being a “racist” by viewing minorities merely as a source of votes while doing nothing for them.
Clinton’s presidential campaign said the ad, released a day after she gave a speech accusing Trump of fueling America’s “radical fringe”, would air in the hotly contested states of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. “Winding down some of these programs takes time”.
But he repeated his pledge that there would be “no legalization” route for undocumented immigrants already in the United States, even those who have committed no crime. “We love our country; we want our country to come back; we want our country to be strong again”.
He also reiterated his pledge to build a wall on the USA border with Mexico and dismissed speculation that he was contemplating a different stance.
Trump has in the past described Mexicans as rapists and drug dealers, and vowed to round up illegal immigrants and build a wall on the southern border – for which he would make Mexico pay.
Trump did his best to refute Clinton’s attacks on Thursday as he attempts to rescue his poll numbers in key swing states.
Giving in to the persistent urging of party leaders, Trump has begun relying more on a TelePrompter, allowing for fewer troublesome off-the-cuff remarks.
Trump also says Clinton is trying to distract from questions swirling around donations to The Clinton Foundation and her exclusive use of her private email servers for official business while secretary of state.
The article implied that her meetings with figures like Melinda Gates and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Muhammad Yunus were “somehow due to connections with the foundation instead of their status as highly respected global leaders”, Ms. Clinton said.
“This week the curtain was truly lifted”, he said”. This is exactly why we need a Special Prosecutor to investigate the blurring of lines between the Clinton State Department, the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton’s personal bank account.

Given their sky-high unfavorable ratings, both Clinton and Trump hope to make the campaign a referendum on each other.
