Marco Rubio, Patrick Murphy win Florida Senate primaries

Canova highlighted another email in the hack that showed Wasserman Schultz complaining to MSNBC about negative coverage, suggesting she wasn’t entirely in support of free speech. Wasserman Schultz, 49, has raised $3 million but has been assisted by spending from political action committees.

Despite being 80 years old, and someone who endorsed Donald Trump even as Trump said he was no hero, Sen. Wasserman Schultz’s primary victory may have been sealed July 24, when she resigned in disgrace from the Democratic National Committee.

It was the first time Wasserman Schultz had faced a primary opponent in her heavily Democratic suburban Fort Lauderdale district. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who last month conceded the Democratic presidential nomination to Hillary Clinton.

The seat is now held by Rep. Gwen Graham (D-FL), the daughter of former Florida governor and senator Bob Graham, who announced she was leaving Congress earlier this year.

“Florida can not afford a hyper-partisan liberal in the United States Senate”, Rubio insisted.

On the Democratic side, Rep. Patrick Murphy defeated Rep. Alan Grayson by a wide margin and now will face Rubio in the November election. She had also been the target of intense criticism throughout the Democratic primary process over her decision to limit the number of debates and because of her support of the superdelegate system, both of which Sanders backers felt conveyed outright support for Hillary Clinton.

“I made the miscalculation of taking Mr. Rubio at his word that he wouldn’t seek re-election if he lost the Presidential Primary”, Beruff said in a statement after losing to Rubio.

In Florida, the former Democratic National Committee chairwoman, Wasserman Schultz, must stave off a challenge for her congressional seat from Bernie Sanders-backed Tim Canova.

Canova had argued that Wasserman Schultz had lost touch with her district as chairman of the national party and had gotten too cozy with special interests. “No matter what is thrown her way, Debbie gets back up and keeps fighting”, said Allison Tant, chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party.

She countered by pointing to Canova’s calls for disarming the Middle East (he denied this included Israel) and his tough criticisms of Israeli settlement policy, which reflected the policies of Sanders, the first Jewish candidate to win major party nominating contests.

And three household names – Marco Rubio, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and John McCain – are all anxious to see if they will survive to fight another day.

Grayson, like Wasserman Schultz, had to run against his own bad press. Wasserman Schultz was notably conflicted over the agreement, and gave an emotional yet equivocal defense of the deal during a September 6, 2015 appearance on CNN .
