But ITT has been under the radar of both federal and state investigators over its recruiting tactics, lending practices and job placement figures.

It wasn’t only the Education Department that punished ITT.

The college has faced scrutiny before. The school now faces fraud charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission accusing executives of lying to investors about losses from its student loan program. He said ITT’s closing was abrupt – way more sudden than for-profit Corinthian College’s closing for the same reasons a year ago. Attorneys general in 19 states have also investigated the school.
ITT Technical Institute has closed all of its campuses, affecting thousands of students across the country and many here in western Virginia.

Nursing students at ITT Technical Institute told newsnet5.com that the schools shutdown affects even students that have completed their coursework. An ITT student going by the name Willie, agreed.
“The school’s decisions have put its students and millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded federal student aid at risk”, the statement said. “In addition, what they should do is reach out to community colleges to see if their credits will transfer”.
On his department’s blog, King said students would be allowed to discharge their education loans or attempt to transfer credits to another institution – the “teach-out” option.

The school accuses the government of “unfairly” stripping it of eligibility for student aid.
