Bouchard – ranked No. 7 in the world at the start of previous year and just now clawing her way back into the top 40 – is done on the court at the U.S. Open. The once-rising star answered every question.

The Canadian starlet was bounced from the first round on Tuesday by Czech Katerina Siniakova, unable to improve on the fourth-round run of 2015 that was abruptly halted when she slipped in a dark physiotherapy room, hit her head and withdrew from the tournament with concussion symptoms that slowed her the rest of the year. She filed suit against the U.S. Tennis Association in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn in October, and that case is still pending, putting the 2014 Wimbledon runner-up in the odd position of competing this week at an event whose organizers she is suing.

“If I sit down to think about it, yeah it’s definitely a unusual situation”.

‘I’m disappointed with what I think happened so I have to fight for what I think is right’. “Obviously, being here it’s crossed my mind, but besides that it has nothing to do with my day-to-day life”.

This year, Bouchard had no one to blame but herself for her first-round stumble as she was tripped up 6-3 3-6 6-2 by 20-year-old Czech Katerina Siniakova, who registered a first ever win at the US Open. It was the latest early loss for a 22-year-old Canadian who reached three Grand Slam semifinals two years ago – and none since.

World No.1 Serena Williams opened her US Open account with a tidy 6-3, 6-3 win over Ekaterina Makarova here Tuesday, to join her sister Venus in the second round of the year’s final Grand Slam.

Ivanovic made it to the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2012, but it has been a steady decline since then at Flushing Meadows. “But it’s something that’s so far in the back of my mind …”

Williams, a two-time victor in Flushing Meadows, next faces Julia Georges, who defeated Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-2.

She added: “I think this year has kind of been a bit up and down and, obviously, I wish I could have been better”. You know I’ve also had great memories here at the U.S. Open.

She married German soccer player Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, and he will play his last match for the national team Wednesday. But it will take a ton of work on her game, both physically and mentally.

The USTA responded with a statement first published on the Sports Business Daily website saying it was “truly unfortunate that a year after her accident, Genie s focus is on matters other than playing to her best ability”.

“As you probably know, her lawyers asked for an extension; the USTA on the other hand has remained ready, willing and able to bring the litigation to a conclusion as expeditiously as is possible whether through settlement discussions or a fully litigated process”. But she may not be done with the U.S. Open in court, her case potentially going to trial if the sides can’t reach a settlement. “Some big tournaments coming up and she’ll be fine”. “I tried to go less for it because I tried to make less errors”, she said.

Ana Ivanovic departs after falling to Denisa Allertova in straight sets. Ivanovic had seven double-faults and 41 unforced errors en route to her second straight U.S. Open first-round loss
