Normally, it takes wins in five full matches to reach a Grand Slam semifinal.

Marc Lopez teamed with Rafael Nadal to win the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Williams brandished her racket and yelled at the line judge, and the point she was docked for that ended the match.

After the 33-year-old Italian lost to Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday, Vinci was asked by a reporter whether she’d be back in 2017. Monfils said. “That’s why people think, ‘Oh, he’s jumping, he’s sliding.’ In the end, you think I’m stupid?” He’s lost in four finals and three semifinals over the past decade. Immediately after the match, Pennetta announced she would leave the tour after last season. She was bothered over the past two weeks by an injured left Achilles tendon and back pain, but still reached her fourth quarterfinal in NY.

“I’m trying to improve, of course, my mental side, because I know I need to stay focused on my game, trying to be here in this moment and not thinking about what’s happened and just thinking about the positive things”, Kerber said. “Right now, I’m feeling very close to the peak”. “I think I handled it pretty good mentally and tennistically”.

Gael Monfils overwhelmed worn out, fellow-Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-3 6-3 to become the first man into the semi-finals of the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

The 10th-seeded Monfils beat Pouille 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in an all-French quarterfinal Tuesday.

WOMEN’S RESULTS (Quarterfinals): No. 2 Angelique Kerber advanced to her first U.S. Open semifinal since 2011, beating No. 7 Roberta Vinci in straight sets; two unseeded players, Anastasija Sevastova and two-time finalist Caroline Wozniacki met in the night match.

Kerber, who has a chance to overtake Williams at No. 1 in the WTA rankings after the tournament, moved into her third Grand Slam semifinal of the year.

In 2008 he won his first major singles title with a victory over Tsonga in the Australian Open.

At last year’s U.S. Open, Vinci stunned Williams in the semifinals, ending the American’s bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam.

Kerber’s first U.S. Open semifinal since 2011 will come against two-time runner-up Caroline Wozniacki, a 6-0, 6-2 victor against Anastasija Sevastova, who injured her right ankle in the second game and was never able to get herself going in the match. They played one point to begin the third set: Tsonga double-faulted, then retired from the match.

As she walked to the sideline, Vinci looked at the line judge who made the call and smiled sarcastically, giving him a thumb’s up and applauding with her racket.

On the first break of the second set, all four points for Monfils came off Pouille’s errors.

Monfils will play either fourth-seeded Nadal or compatriot Pouille for a place in the U.S. Open semi-finals.

Monfils, 30, said he regards Djokovic as one of the greatest players ever, but would not shrink from a chance to play the Serb for a berth in Sunday’s U.S. Open final.

The 24th-seeded Pouille quite simply ran out of steam, winding up with just about three times as many unforced errors as Monfils, 44-15. He has won three of seven meetings with good friend Tsonga.

Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, returns a shot to Madison Keys, of the United States, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in NY.
