Donald Trump promises a foreign policy rooted in ‘realism’

The New York businessman, who has struggled at times to demonstrate a command of foreign policy, also seemed to acknowledge he does not now have a plan to address cyber security or the Islamic State group.

Mr Trump called for more troops, more planes and more boats at a rally in Philadelphia.

He said he would ask Pentagon leaders to present a plan within 30 days to defeat and destroy the Islamic State group if he won the November 8 election.

Both parties and both presidential campaigns know the importance of every vote in North Carolina.

In his speech he called his vision for the United States military “peace through strength”.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump speaks to Matt Lauer during the Commander-in-Chief Forum in NY on September 7, 2016.

While GOP candidates are often seen by voters as having an advantage on military and national security issues, Trump is far from a traditional Republican.

“Despite close numbers, Hillary Clinton is poised to win by dominating the issue dimensions of governing, caring, temperament and being for the middle class”, said pollster Celinda Lake, a Democrat and president of Lake Research Partners, a group that conducted the poll with the university.

Numerous proposals outlined by the Republican standard bearer in his Philadelphia speech come from the conservative Heritage Institute, which has advocated for tying defense spending to the country’s gross domestic product. Reagan made appeals to the military and security-minded voters a key part of his winning electoral strategy in the 1980s.

Quizzed by NBC host Matt Lauer on his previous complimentary remarks about Mr Putin, Mr Trump responded: “He does have an 82% approval rating”.

“This will require rethinking the failed policies”.

“Our adversaries are chomping at the bit”, he added.

A Trump adviser said the Republican candidate would ensure the additional spending is fully paid for.

While Trump has often complained that USA forces are not large enough or well-equipped, he’s also said that he’d save money by cutting waste and ensuring that contractors aren’t getting sweetheart deals due to their connections or lobbying efforts.

“She knows that we are stronger when we work with our allies around the world to keep us safe, and has put forward real plans to deal with the threat of ISIS and broader terror threats”, according to the Hillary for Iowa statement. It’s going to be great.

Asked if he would vote for her, Cohen said: “In all likelihood, I would say yes”.

Meanwhile, Trump, 70, attacked Clinton over the email controversy.

Overall, 47 percent of voters who are now serving or have previously served in the USA military said they would not be confident in Trump’s ability to serve as an effective commander-in-chief of the US military.

Asked about what critics call her hawkish foreign policy record, Clinton said: “We are not putting ground troops into Iraq ever again and we are not putting ground troops into Syria”.

“Steadiness, an absolute rock steadiness, mixed with strength to make the hard decisions”, she said.

Most notably, he was involved in a spat with family members of a Muslim-American soldier killed during the Iraq War.
