Brees agrees to short extension, gives Saints cap assist

But the one-year extension that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees agreed to on Wednesday is, for all intents and purposes, lame-duck prevention.

Most important for Brees and the Saints, though, is that the best player in franchise history continues his trek to the Hall of Fame in a Saints uniform.

The contract runs for five years, starting this season, and includes a $30 million bonus that, for now, can be prorated over that period, reducing the $30 million that Brees’ old contract would have counted against the Saints’ salary cap this season down to a little more than $17 million.

“I’m humbled and honored, and have been from the day that I first stepped foot in here as a New Orleans Saint”, Brees said. It’s never just a black-and-white situation when it comes to transactions in the NFL. “My mindset is always everything happens for a reason and everything will happen the way it’s supposed to”.

“Both sides are very happy”. Certainly, I am. I’m very happy.

“This allows me to be around here for a bit longer, and I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me”, Brees said.

“It’s probably a bit more complicated than it should be”.

Brees said Wednesday he has more than two years left in him.

And as long as he’s in the lineup, the Saints know they have a chance to contend.

“That’s the one that’s kind of questionable, you wasted that pick”. “If you don’t have a quarterback, you don’t compete and that’s what we want”.

After that, the Saints can decide if Brees has enough left in the tank to finish off his career as a Saint and ride off into the sunset. He completed 68.3 percent of his 428 passes with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, keeping his average during the lifetime of his current deal with the Saints over 5,000 yards and 37 touchdowns per season.

“What he’s brought to the Saints, what he’s brought to New Orleans post-Katrina and the philanthropic work that he’s done, the things that he stands for, I’m really proud to call him my friend”. “That was the objective”. The Saints have added a wedge to the sill while also giving themselves more time to find Brees’ successor.

San Diego faces the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and all indications are that Bosa, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, won’t play. He was on the last year of his five-year deal that he signed after the 2011 season, which was one of the greatest for any quarterback in National Football League history as he led one of the best offenses in National Football League history. On Wednesday, the two parties agreed to a contract extension for the veteran quarterback.

Undoubtedly, though, Brees said he extended his stay in the place he is most comfortable.

“The thing we’re all aligned on is what puts this team in the best position to win and the best position to win a championship”, Brees said. “I can’t say it’s like that everywhere else”. In fact, I know it’s not like that everywhere else. So I would say we have something unique here, and that is from the top down. Collins is better than Peat, and could have been acquired for much less money, Mr. Benson. “We’re making sure we’re looking at each available option for us. And I think we all feel a great sense of responsibility to prove him right and come through for everything he has done for us”.
