Three years after rationalist Narendra Dabholkar’s murder in Pune, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday filed the first charge sheet accusing Virendra Tawde of murder and hatching a conspiracy.
“The motive for the murder of Narendra Dabholkar was allegedly the long enmity/hatred that existed between two private organisations”.
“This is a significant development, officially the Sanatan Sanstha has been named and Dr Tawde and the others have been named”, said Mr Dabholkar’s son Hamid.
The CBI has claimed that the chief conspirator was ENT specialist Virendra Tawde – of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and also linked with the Sanatan Sanstha. A red corner notice was issued against him too. Tawde had allegedly tried to procure countrymade guns from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and even attempted to manufacture the weapons, CBI sources said. Tawde also introduced Akolkar to him, who later showed a high-quality country made pistol and revolver which he was carrying.
The CBI also found several emails exchanged between Tawde, Akolkar and Pawar, discussing the elimination of Dabholkar in code language.
The agency is likely to file more charge sheets in the matter, the spokesperson said. Tawde has been named a co-conspirator in the murder. “Further investigation is continuing to unearth the entire conspiracy and to reveal the identity of all known/unknown accused”, she said.
The bill was passed by the legislature after Dabholkar’s death.
Dr Dabholkar, the complaint said, was murdered in the morning of August 20, 2013, around 7.30 am by two unidentified persons aged 25-30 years, and of medium height.
Other accused Sarang Akolkar and Vinay Pawar are still at large. The six prosecution witnesses are sweepers from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), including one beggar, who heard the sound of the bullet and saw two people fleeing on a motorbike.

A CBI official said, “We suspect the involvement of Sarang Akolkar as well as Vinay Pawar, since he is good at logistical support for the Sanstha’s “disruptive” activities”.
