‘Straight Outta Compton’ Posts Big $60.2 Million Opening Weekend

This weekend’s big box office draw was “Straight Outta Compton” which pulled in $60.2 million over the weekend, easily beating out all other movies.

Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren and Neil Brown Jr. as DJ Yella. Warner Bros.’ “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”, another new offering, debuted in third with $13.5 million, on par with tracking estimates, reports the LA Times.

In second place is “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation“, which eased to $17 million after two weeks at the top of the list.

Meanwhile, the weekend’s only other wide release, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

The biopic Straight Outta Compton is being heralded for its historic accuracy in depicting the racial tension and police brutality of the mid-’80s in Los Angeles, a period when the N.W.A. rap group was popularizing “gangsta” rap. “‘Walk the Line, ‘ James Mangold’s Johnny Cash biopic, debut with $22 million back in 2008 on the way to a $119 million domestic cume”.

The film was directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer as a pair of American and Russian agents during the Cold War-era. Fantastic Four, $8 million; 5.

Straight Outta Compton performed even better than the studio predicted over its stunning opening weekend at the box office.

It marks the latest hit for Universal, who have dominated the global box office this year.

“All good forms of art do more than just flatter you“, said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief.

Straight Outta Compton box office collections: “It really struck a chord with audiences”. It has spent $31.3 million over its entire pre-launch.

The ninth spot went to “Ricki and the Flash“, starring Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep as a rock-and-roller trying to mend ties with her long-suffering family, with US$4.6 million.
