Rutherglen CLP back Owen Smith in Labour leadership contest

Of the 130,000 who paid the £25 fee to sign up a registered supporter, 70 per cent are expected to choose Corbyn in the contest. Mr Corbyn made the pledge to try to win over his opponents within the Parliamentary Labour Party as he launched a variety of policies aimed at achieving equality for women.

Following the Brexit vote, she said Scotland did not need “more turmoil, more upheaval and more economic chaos”, which she said would result from a second referendum.

The Labour leader is using social media to appeal to activists, particularly younger voters, in his fight against challenger Owen Smith.

In a Facebook post, the MP expressed her disgust at party members being blocked from taking part in the election.

BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme asked Mr Smith if there should be a rerun of the Scottish referendum.

“If the Scottish people chose that’s what they wanted and there was agreement in the Labour Party, then that would be for them to determine it”.

Research by YouGov puts the veteran left-winger on 62 per cent, with rival Owen Smith trailing far behind on 38 per cent.

His focus on democracy is particularly significant as it would be more than a simple policy change, and could result in strengthened popular pressure against austerity, holding any future Labour governments to account, and setting the framework for widespread better visions of what society can and should be like.

“We have people living the high life overseas and getting awards back here”.

The Labour leader will promise to set up online meetings where people can have their say on legislation.
