China offers “free screening” for travellers from Zika-hit countries
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said all worldwide travel healthcare centres would offer “free Zika screening and tests” to all individuals arriving from countries where local Zika transmission had been confirmed.

“Our study suggests that the eye could be a reservoir for Zika virus”.
The study said the eyes of the mice also might be used to test anti-Zika drugs.
The eyes, Diamond said, are considered an “immune-privileged site”, meaning the immune system is less active there, so as not to accidently damage delicate eye tissue.
Meanwhile, health officials here in IN are tracking a mosquito that has the potential to carry Zika and has already been found around the state. Its transmission is believed to be confined to “reproductive fluids” and not other bodily fluids like sweat or saliva. We can’t keep living virus to virus, disease to disease – and we shouldn’t be robbing Peter to pay Paul – we need to fight Ebola and Zika.
“Mounting evidence has shown that sexual transmission of Zika virus is possible and more common than previously assumed”, the World Health Organization said in new guidelines. This means infections sometimes persist in the eye after they have been eliminated from the rest of the body, the study authors explained. That includes 596 cases of Zika thought to be contracted by people traveling outside Florida and 56 “non-travel” cases – that is, infections of people who caught Zika near home or work.
With the start of fall semester, I want to share important information about Zika virus disease.
The speed of disease transmission is often tracked by the amount of virus contained in the blood.
To determine what effect Zika infection has on the eye, the researchers infected adult mice under the skin and found the live virus in the eyes seven days later.
Some public health experts said pregnancy should be delayed as that is only way to avoid birth defects in babies born to Zika infected mothers.
The CDC also is advising pregnant women not to travel to an area where active Zika transmission is ongoing, and to use insect repellent and wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts if they are in those areas. Apte is a professor of ophthalmology and visual science.

Zika causes only mild symptoms such as fever and a rash for most people but pregnant women who catch it can give birth to babies with microcephaly, a deformation marked by abnormally small brains and heads.
