Everton’s James McCarthy out for three weeks: Koeman

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has revealed that he expects to be without James McCarthy for the remainder of the month after the midfielder underwent surgery on his groin.

Koeman will be without McCarthy, who has not played since Everton’s EFL Cup win against Yeovil on August 23, as he was forced off with a groin strain in the 4-0 victory.

The 25-year-old also missed the Toffees’ 1-0 win over Stoke City prior to the global break and will likely sit out a further five games before returning to action, although full-back and compatriot Seamus Coleman is back to full fitness. “He is now fit to start”.

Although Koeman conceded it was “disappointing” not to sign Moussa Sissoko on deadline day, with the France worldwide instead switching from Newcastle United to Tottenham, he declared himself “happy” with Everton’s transfer window.

They only added five new players in the end, as Koeman appeared to add quality rather than quantity to his squad.

“I can’t say anything about his situation at West Ham but we were interested in him and he was interested in coming to Everton”, the Dutchman said.

And their second string XI does show that perhaps they should have pushed harder for more signings to improve their options in at least three areas.
