And that, of course, made them fear for their lives. Options will be discussed during medical check-ups going forward as to whether to keep it in long-term or not. Williams said he remembered his wife coming into the home screaming.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMDP) has called this a “tragic incident”, with 48-year old Williams was reportedly mistaken for his wife’s assailant by 9-year veteran police officer Christopher Mills.

Williams was shot when he emerged from his home with a gun just as officers were arriving.

Police also released heavily edited audio of the call between a police dispatcher and the officers who were responding to the scene. Williams was taken to a local hospital and listed in serious condition but is expected to survive.

Williams told dispatchers the suspect had on a red shirt with a long rifle.

“The homeowner was shot at least once in the mid-section”, said The Indianapolis Star. The officer: Christopher Mills, a nine-year veteran now assigned to the East District. Mills is now on administrative duty pending the investigation’s completion.

Police said that the original suspect is “still at large”.

Just another insane story in a BAD summer for police officers…

Police said in the news conference that, when the officer arrived, he saw the vehicle still there although he’d been told the robber was gone. Hailey went on to say there is “some agreement” with police on that fact. “The last thing we want to do is confront” the legal owner of a gun in their home, said police.

Williams previously served as a police officer in the military for eight years and understands the challenges faced by law enforcement, according to the release.

In the 911 call, Williams’ wife said she was held at gunpoint during a carjacking. The officers believed this was the suspect’s vehicle and began looking for him around the Williams’ property. They thought he was the armed suspect.

The postal worker says he was in his garage with his handgun at his right side when he was shot early Tuesday.

Williams and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary only three days before he was shot.

When he asked the police officer who shot him why he had done so, the man replied: “I don’t know”. The outpouring of support in the community has touched his heart.

Since promising greater transparency about police shootings, the IMPD has emulated police departments around the country by attempting to give a full account of the incident.

“It scared me”, she said.
